Gokyo Lake Everest Region
Gokyo Lake Everest Region

While Everest Base Camp is the most popular destination in the Khumbu Region, Gokyo, with outstanding views of lakes and mountains, comes a close second. Combine these two trails and you have an absolute winner.

Trek to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes takes you across charming Sherpa villages dotted with stone houses and Buddhist monuments. The lush green alpine meadows and pine forests vanish as you ascend higher above the treeline.

Beyond the village of Pangboche, there is no permanent human settlement. With only a cluster of teahouses, places like Lobuche, Gorak Shep, and Gokyo Valley offers you a unique wilderness experience.

The walk to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes, the highest trekking destination in the world, can be physically draining but fulfilling. To be able to stand at the foot of the world’s tallest mountain is an achievement in itself.

Though the summit of Mount Everest is not visible from the base camp, the views of Khumbu Icefall and Khumbu Glacier are simply breathtaking.

EBC is also the camping ground of Mount Everest expedition groups and one finds colorful tents pitched along the rocky glacier during climbing season.

A hike to Kala Patthar presents you with a spectacular 360-degree view of Mount Everest, Pumori, Nuptse, and other giants. Kala Patthar, at 5,550m, is the highest viewpoint in the Everest region.

A crossing of one or all of the three high passes – Cho La, Kongma La, and Renjo la- is required while trekking to the Gokyo Lakes. Here you can experience raw nature – pristine, undisturbed, and immaculate.

The turquoise shade of the Gokyo Lakes is spellbinding. The six Gokyo Lakes are interconnected and fed by the melting ice of the Ngozumpa Glacier. These lakes are the highest freshwater lake system in the world. The perfect view of the lakes can be enjoyed by climbing Gokyo Ri, a small hill rising above the lakes.

While the Everest Base Camp trail is usually busy and crowded, the Gokyo Valley route is secluded and peaceful. Taking the route connecting both these destinations rewards you with a more enriching experience.

You will not only get to enjoy epic views and scenery, but the physical and mental challenges you face en route will make you a stronger and better individual.
