7. Gosaikunda

A perfect blend of three scenic places, Langtang Gosaikunda Helambu Trek is an exclusive experience to walk through the natural beauty of the region. Trek through the lush landscape ranging from subtropical forest to alpine zone and overlooking Langtang Lirung, Manaslu, and Ganesh Himal. Trek to Gosaikunda and worship Lord Shiva at the holy glacial Lake at 4460m from sea level.

Starting from a beautiful ride from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, head to Lama Hotel, Mundu, and Kyangjin Gompa for a rest day. Explore Tserko Ri and get the beautiful views of the snowy white peaks. On the 9th day, reach Gosaikunda(4460m). The Holy Lake is a cultural site for the Hindus.

Later head towards Lauribena Pass, Melamchi Gaon, Tarke Gyang, and Sermanthang before driving back to Kathmandu.

Langtang Trek FAQ

1. What is the best time to do Langtang Trek?

The best time to trek to Langtang is during the spring (Mar-May) and autumn (Sept-Nov). Langtang region has different experiences to offer in different seasons. Such as:

Autumn season

Autumn season is one of the peak time where large crowds of trekkers come to visit the region. With the suitable warmth and weather, the views of the surrounding under the clear blue sky are exceptional. The temperature goes from 10-15 degrees Celsius which is appropriate for trekkers to trek during the day time.

Spring season

The second best season to trek in the Langtang region is spring where the temperature ranges from 10-22 degrees Celsius. With long and warm days, there is no rush to reach the destination. You can slowly trek witnessing the beautiful blooming flowers along the trail.

Monsoon season

The monsoon season from June to August is the hottest season and the beginning of rainy days. The trails might be blocked due to slippery and wet roads. There are higher chances of heavy rainfalls making it uncomfortable to trek. Although the fog might interrupt the visibility of the mountains, you can enjoy the greenery after the rainfall.

Winter season

The coldest season starts from December to February where the temperature drops below zero degrees Celsius. Also, there are higher chances of strong winds, heavy snowfall, and rough weather. With days shorter and nights longer, trekking can be difficult. Nevertheless, you can anticipate lesser crowd and can be an option for adventurous trekkers.

2. Should I get worried about altitude sickness?

Langtang region trek takes you from the lower point to the maximum point of the region.

On easy level treks, you reach to the maximum altitude of 2400m, where you are less likely to get altitude mountain sickness. However, if you ascend above 3000m, you might get the symptoms of altitude sickness such as headache, dizziness, nausea and shortening of breathe.

On the difficult treks that takes you above 5000m, make sure you descend slowly and sleep on the lower altitude. On extreme difficulty, make sure you consult the guide and take necessary safety/medicines.

The symptoms mainly include dizziness, headache, dry cough, fatigue, rapid breathing, and so on. To prevent this, make sure you climb high but sleep low, take enough food and water and notice slight changes on your body.

3. How difficult is Langtang Trek?

Langtang region trek is divided into three levels: easy, easy to moderate and moderate to difficult.

For easy trek, you attain the highest altitude of 2400m. For this you have to walk for an average of 5-6 hours daily. Such treks, with low difficulty level, are suitable for novice trekkers as well and can be enjoyed as family trek with children.

For easy to moderate trek, you reach at the maximum altitude below or at 5000m. You are expected to walk for maximum of 7 hours and minimum of 4 hours. On average, you walk for 6 hours which is suitable for both novice and experienced trekker. You do not need to be reasonably fit but prior hiking experience will hype up your confidence.

For moderate to difficult trek, you are likely to reach the maximum altitude above 5000m. For this, you walk for 6 hours daily on average. Some itineraries takes you through Himalayan pass such as Ganja La Pass which takes advance fitness and only experience trekkers are suitable for such trek.

4. What permits do I need?

For the Langtang region trek, you need to issue two permits as mentioned by the Government of Nepal. You require Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS Card) which is mandatory for anyone undertaking the trek. The Langtang trek takes you through gorgeous park which requires Entry Permit. These are issued in Nepal Tourism Board, Kathmandu and shown on various checkpoints. If not found, you can purchase the permits on the spot with extra charges and fines.

5. Food and accomodation during the trek?

You encounter tea Houses which are built using local materials. These are family-run lodges that are quite comfortable to be at. The toilets are usually separate, sometimes outside. As per your budget, the lodges can provide extra quilt and mattress. However, it is better to carry your sleeping bag. Most lodges provide locks for your room or you can use your own. Make sure you carry extra toilet papers and sanitizers.

For food, you get various meals on the menu. But mostly ordered meal is typical Dal Bhat which includes rice, lentils, and curry. All foods are cooked in the kitchen using fresh and organic vegetables. You can find a lot of garlic on the menu as it helps trekkers acclimatize. You have to pay extra for luxury items such as soft drinks, and chocolates.

The drinking water is found in the tea houses or lodges which takes you minimal charges for boiled water. During the trek, you come across different water taps that provide free drinking water. However, use boiled water to remain on the safe side. Mineral water bottles’ charges go up as you ascend to the higher elevations. Thus, it is better to carry water purifying tablets on the trek.

6. Is credit card accepted or ATMs available in the trek route?

You can find credit card payments or banks or ATM booths in the cities such as Kathmandu. But in the remote areas, such facilities are hard to find. Make sure you carry enough Nepali currency during the trek for any kind of purchase or service. Currency exchange is done in airports, banks, or any exchange currency booths in Kathmandu.

7. Can I find a telephone, electricity, and WI-Fi on the trek?

You encounter different community lodges during the trek in the higher altitude. You may find electricity and Wi-Fi but you have to pay an extra amount for the services. Also, for any mode of communication, you can buy a local SIM card from the airport or any store in Kathmandu by submitting copies of your photo and passport.

8. Do I need a guide?

Not necessarily. Langtang region is not a restricted area of Nepal so you can travel solo without a guide. But, the trails are confusing and go through different rocky edges, dense forests, and narrow paths, so it might be difficult for a first-time trekker to navigate the way. Also, there are few teahouses in the trail so it is difficult to find accommodation during the peak time. Thus, traveling with a guide provides all kinds of services and helps to get more insight into the region.

However, some itineraries include climbing to Ganja la pass where a guide is mandatory. Ganja La Pass is a challenging high altitude trek which demands trekkers to be experienced and have advance physical fitness.
